In almost every Taiwanese household, there is at least one electric meter. These meters have not only tracked energy consumption but also carried the collective routines of countless families. As power technology moves towards digital transformation, retired mechanical electricity meters have found an opportunity to be transformed.

Thus, we initiated this upcycling project to transform “memories of energy” into “warmth of life”. 5,000 retired meters were disassembled by hand, and those detached glass covers were consigend to a furnace at 1,000°C for refinement. The weathered etchings from the past are reborn as delicate layers of light refraction, returning to the public eye as functional tableware.

This project carries the pulse of the city, the history of energy, and the collective memory of Taiwanese life. We ensure that energy culture is not merely observed, but held, touched, and integrated into everyday life. With the strength that once guarded us all, it continues to accompany your life in the gentlest manner.

The Evolution of Mechanical Electric Meters

Electric meters are one of the most common and yet essential electrical devices in Taiwanese households. It is a sophisticated metering device housed inside a glossy and transparent glass cover. As the aluminum disc slowly rotates, it simultaneously drives the mechanical structure, quietly accumulating the usage record of each kilowatt-hour.

Since 1955, with the increasing availability of glass materials, mechanical electric meters with transparent glass covers protecting their internal mechanisms began to be widely used in Taiwan. Today, as power technology moves towards intelligent automation, these mechanical meters, having completed their historical mission, become important artifacts witnessing the development of Taiwan's power industry in the past.

Electric Meter Glass Cover

With the transparent glass cover of the mechanical electric meter, meter readers and users can easily observe the digits and the rotation of the aluminum disc. Characterized by its high hardness, resistance to deformation, and heat and weather endurance, glass maintains its transparency even after long-term outdoor exposure. With mature processing techniques, glass became the ideal material for meter covers during that era. To ensure equipment safety, glass covers are typically used with sealing locks to prevent unauthorized access. Once the glass breaks or the seal is breached, the power company can immediately detect the abnormality.

Electric Meter Clock Face

The panel consists of five rings displaying numbers from 0 to 9 on each ring. When household appliances are turned on, the aluminum disc inside the electric meter slowly rotates as electricity consumption increases, driving the gear system step by step. The arrangement of the numbers on each disc is an alternating combination of clockwise and counterclockwise rotations. This design is derived from the linkage principle of the internal gear transmission mechanism. Through the forward and reverse connection between the gears, each number can be progressively advanced.

Wa-Wa Bowl

The name "Wa-Wa Bowl" is derived from the unit of electrical power, the "Watt," while also echoing the Taiwanese pronunciation of the word "bowl" (uánn).

This glass bowl is crafted from the melted glass covers of retired electric meters. Inheriting the substantial and steady texture of electric meter cover, the exterior features a delicate matte-etched finish, intentionally preserving an elliptical transparent window that transforms the meter’s original observation portal into a poetic visual centerpiece. Inside the window, a subtle decal features the iconic TPC lightning bolt logo alongside "C003"—the specific material code for mechanical meters—marking each bowl with a unique electrical identity. Throughout the design transformation, we have preserved the distinctive proportions, contours, and recessed lines of the original meter, paying homage to the resilient aesthetics of industrial design.

The stainless steel saucer is a perfect replica of the stainless steel clamping ring of electric meters, originally used to seal the glass cover to the meter body. Meticulously engraved on its surface are five numerical dials and pointers; these hidden codes chronicle TPC’s journey of guardianship from 1946 to its 80th anniversary. Finally, the "infinity symbol (∞)" integrated into the design symbolizes an enduring commitment to environmental sustainability.

Chin-Chin Cup

The name "Chin-Chin Cup" comes from the electricity unit "kilowatt-hour (kWh)”, and its pronunciation is the same as “chin chin”, symbolizing the joyful moment of raising a glass and sharing.

Crafted from melted glass covers of retired electric meters, the cup inherits their substantial and steady texture. Through refined craftsmanship, the abstract language of energy is transformed into a tangible and tactile experience in daily life.

Both sides of the cup feature the classic TPC lightning bolt logo and the identification number C003—the exclusive material code representing its heritage as a mechanical electric meter serving at TPC. The embossed and concave design documents the material's transformation process. The exterior features a fine matte-etched finish, providing a warm, non-slip grip. In contrast, the base remains perfectly transparent, replicating the clear viewing angle intended for "meter reading." This allows the pure essence and beauty of contents seen through the evocative interplay of light and shadow.

Designed for everyday use, the Chien-Chien Cup boasts a practical 400ml capacity, easily accommodating a full standard aluminum can of beverage.
