Hydropower Brass Strip Recycling Project

《Writing the Current of Power》

TPCreative collaborates with YSTUDIO, blending Taipower’s commitment to sustainability through circular economy with YSTUDIO’s dedication to crafting premium stationery. Through creativity and craftsmanship, they transform decommissioned brass sealing strips into lifestyle products. The process preserves the original texture of the brass, while CNC cutting recycles metal shavings for re-melting, achieving a zero-waste closed-loop production. These brass strips, once part of hydropower generation, now carry the legacy of energy history into everyday writing experiences.

The story of the Brass Sealing Strip starts with the hydropower of Sun Moon Lake.

In 1919, Government-General of Taiwan founded the Taiwan Electric Power Co. Ltd. and implemented the Sun Moon Lake hydropower project, in which water level difference was adopted to convert energy for driving generators.

In 1950s, hydropower once was responsible for more than half of total electricity generation in Taiwan. The manufacturing, household appliances, and film screenings all depended on Taipower and the diligent operation at Sun Moon Lake power plants. It could be said that hydropower plants illuminated the entire era.

To date, Sun Moon Lake remains one of the most complex hydropower systems in Taiwan. It not only generates electricity using water level differences like conventional hydropower plants, but also effectively utilizes pumped storage in upper and lower pools. This has led Sun Moon Lake becoming the largest energy storage battery in Taiwan.

The Sun Moon Lake Hydropower Project is the heart of Taiwan’s power system. It harnesses water from the Central Mountain Range, using Sun Moon Lake as its reservoir. From there, water travels through a 1.9-kilometer underground tunnel, passing the Shuishe Dam—100 meters high and 1,000 meters long—before rushing through penstocks into the Menpaitan Power Station (now known as Takuan Power Plant). Behind the station lie five parallel steel penstocks, each over 2,000 meters long and 6 meters in diameter, channeling water further east to the Second Power Station at Shuilikeng (now known as Juguang Power Plant). Today, these facilities are managed by Takuan and Mingtan Power Plants.

From Water to Power: The Design Secrets of Circuits and Shimmering Lake Light

We’ve thoughtfully integrated elements of the Sun Moon Lake hydropower system and power plant into the design. The outer packaging features a laser-etched circuit diagram that gleams with electric flow under refracted light, while the inner box is laser-etched with contour lines of the Sun Moon Lake area, creating shimmering ripples of light that evoke the beauty of the lake’s surface.

Brass Sealing Strip

The Brass Sealing Strip is an essential component in pumped-storage hydropower generators, sealing the gaps between guide vanes to ensure smooth switching between generation and pumping modes. Made from aluminum bronze and gunmetal alloys, it offers excellent strength and durability, commonly used in marine propellers and bearings. These retired strips come from Taiwan’s Daguan and Mingtan power plants near Sun Moon Lake. Since each generator undergoes major overhaul only once every ten years, and replacement is not always needed, it took four years to gather just 180 strips, making them truly rare. During the remelting process, the original texture and natural pores are preserved—each pen becoming a unique fusion of craftsmanship, history, and the enduring memory of hydropower.

A Sustainable Journey from Power to Pen

The Sun Moon Lake Hydropower Writing Project repurposes 180 retired Brass Sealing Strips—totaling about 390 kilograms—through circular production. Using CNC cutting, remelting, sand casting, and machining, the materials are fully utilized, achieving zero waste. The Hydropower Ballpoint Pen uses 70% recycled material, while the pen stand achieves 100% recycled content with no added materials. These regenerated pens and stands extend the mission of the Brass Sealing Strip, transforming its role from generating power to inspiring writing, carrying the historical and cultural legacy of Sun Moon Lake’s hydropower engineering. Electricity once lit up cities and factories, driving Taiwan’s path to modernity; now, through each stroke of the pen, we carry that spirit of energy into daily life.
