Brass Sealing Strip from Sun-Moon Lake Hydropower
The brass sealing strip is a distinctive element of the pump storage power station. It works with the guide vane of turbine to enhance pumping efficiency and provide flexible water flow adjustment. This allows for efficient power scheduling during peak and off-peak load. Moreover, it enables quick startup of power generation operations to cater for electricity demand.

封水銅條是抽蓄發電機組獨有的結構，是抽蓄機組從發電模式變身為抽蓄模式的重要關鍵，它可以完全密封導翼間的空隙，阻隔渦殼中的水進入動輪圈，確保動輪反轉變身為水泵，將水從下游水庫反抽回上游存放。封水銅條在高達5層樓的抽蓄發電機組中是非常微小的結構，它鑲嵌在導翼上下方的洩水環上，平均安置在導翼之間，每一圈洩水環有20根封水銅條，一部機組有40根。
Material Knowledge
Hidden deep inside the towering pumped-storage generator — as tall as a five-story building — the small but essential Brass Sealing Strip plays a key role. When the generator switches from generating electricity to pumping water back uphill, this strip seals the narrow gaps between the guide vanes, preventing reverse water flow. Each unit contains 40 of these strips, embedded between the guide vanes to ensure stable operation under immense pressure.
材料特性
封水銅條是兩種銅合金製成的，分別是鋁青銅與炮金銅，是將銅與比例不等的鋁、鎳、錫等多種金屬合成，以提高材料強度與延展性。具有良好的耐用度，經常使用於船用螺旋槳、軸承、連動機構、輪機材料及水車幫浦等。退役封水銅條進行熔煉製作水力筆，過程中會在筆身表面產生一些微小的氣孔，這些氣孔是材料冶金的現象，展現材料獨特的外觀及特性。
Material Property
Made from aluminum bronze and gunmetal alloys, the brass sealing strips combine copper with varying proportions of aluminum, nickel, and tin to enhance durability and malleability. These alloys are commonly used in marine propellers, bearings, and pump systems. During the remelting process to create hydro-themed pens, small pores naturally appear on the pen surface — a unique metallurgical trait reflecting the material's authenticity.
材料來源及數量
封水銅條來自於台電唯二的兩座抽蓄水力發電廠，它們都位於日月潭周邊，一座是成立於1985年的大觀二廠，另一座是1995年誕生的明潭發電廠。由於抽蓄發電機組每隔10年才會進行大修，大修時同仁就會依照儀器測量判斷銅條需不需要進行汰換，所以每年汰換的數量並不一定，這次的再製計劃費時四年才蒐集了180條，也因此更顯得珍貴。
Source & Quantity
The brass sealing strips were retired from Taipower’s only two pumped-storage power stations: the Takuan No. 2 Plant (est. 1985) and the Mingtan Power Plant (est. 1995), both located near Sun Moon Lake. Since each unit undergoes major overhaul only once every ten years, the quantity of strips replaced annually is extremely limited. This restoration project took four years to collect just 180 strips, making each piece truly rare and valuable.
